“Es Nuestro Derecho”

It is a profound honor to share this song “Es Nuestro Derecho” I recorded with bomba puertorriqueña maestro Dr. Drum of Bomba Yo as an offering of healing for Earth Day. Each day I have sat with these lyrics, “it is our right to breathe,” and each day they have brought me new meaning. It is our right to breathe clean air, it is our right to exist free from violence, it is our right stop and take a breathe. What comes to mind for you? Today I think about the fact that BIPOC communities have always been the first to feel the effects of the destruction of our Earth and have also been the first on the frontlines to stop its destruction. I also think about what Dr. Drum has taught me about the powerful technology of rhythm that our African Ancestors have given us in order to reconnect with our breathe and our connection to this Earth. First, he explained that rhythm is inextricably connected to our breathe, “I can breathe because I have rhythm.” He then explained that through rhythm as expressed through bomba “music allows us to breathe again.” I am so humbled that he invited me to record on this song and create this video in collaboration with Gaetano Vaccaro. May this song be an offering to help us assert our right to breathe, with clean air and liberated from harm.

Es un profundo honor compartir esta canción “Es Nuestro Derecho” que grabé con el maestro de Bomba Puertorriqueña Dr. Drum del grupo Bomba Yo, como una ofrenda de sanación para el Día de la Tierra. Cada día he meditado con esta frase, “es nuestro derecho para respirar,” y cada día me ha traído un nuevo significado. Es nuestro derecho respirar aire puro, es nuestro derecho vivir libre de violencia, es nuestro derecho tomar un descanso y respirar. ¿Qué piensas? Hoy pienso en el hecho de que las comunidades BIPOC siempre han sido las primeras de sufrir los efectos de la destrucción de nuestra Tierra, y también han sido las primeras en el frente para combatir su destrucción. Igualmente, pienso en lo que Dr. Drum me ha enseñado sobre la poderosa tecnología del ritmo que nuestros Ancestros Africanos nos han regalado para reconectarnos con nuestra respiración y nuestra conexión con la Tierra. Primero, explicó que el ritmo está indisolublemente conectado con nuestra respiración: “Puedo respirar porque tengo ritmo”. Luego explicó que a través del ritmo como en la bomba: “la música nos permite volver a respirar”. Me siento tan honrada que me haya invitado a grabar esta canción y crear este video en colaboración con Gaetano Vaccaro. Que este canto sea una ofrenda que nos ayude a afirmar nuestro derecho a respirar, respirar aire limpio y liberarnos de todo daño.
